Experience the magic of Outlander on a private day trip from Edinburgh. Follow in the footsteps of Jamie and Claire as you explore Scotland’s famous filming locations.
We’ll make our way to the imposing stronghold of Blackness Castle, which served as the filming location for Fort William, where Jamie suffered a flogging in Outlander Series 1. Throughout history, this 15th-century castle played a dual role as a garrison fortress and state prison, rather than simply serving as a tranquil lordly residence. The castle is situated in a picturesque spot on the southern shores of the Firth of Forth and is known as the ‘ship that never sailed.’
Next, we’ll take a brief trip to explore Linlithgow Palace, whose grand ruins served as the filming location for the prison entrance and corridors where Jamie was held captive. Linlithgow was previously a preferred residence of the Stewart monarchs, who commissioned construction work over successive generations. In the 16th century, both James V and Mary Queen of Scots were born here, adding to the palace’s historical significance.
Following lunch, we’ll make our way to Doune Castle, which was used as the filming location for the fictional Castle Leoch. Originally a royal residence, Doune is a delightful sight with its 100 ft. high gatehouse and remarkably preserved great hall. Fans of Outlander will immediately recognize Doune as the home of Colum MacKenzie and his clan in the 18th century episodes. It is also featured in the 20th century episode, where Claire and Frank take a day trip to the castle ruins.
As we make our way back, we’ll pass through the picturesque village of Culross, which provides an immersive experience of stepping back in time to the 18th century. The well-maintained rustic whitewashed buildings, including the Town House where witches were tried and held for execution, are a sight to behold. The village was transformed into Cranesmuir, the residence of Geillis Duncan and her husband Arthur, in Outlander. Behind the impressive historic Culross Palace lies a stunning herb garden where Claire tended to plants in the show, featuring lawns, herbs, and vegetables typical of the time. Finally, we’ll journey back to Edinburgh.
