A Local’s Guide to a Slow Day in Edinburgh

Written by Christian and Amelia, who are the photographer duo behind Masters Masters Co., specialising in lifestyle content for Scottish hospitality brands.

As a photographer based here in Edinburgh, I’ve built up a list of favourite places I return to often—spots I always recommend when friends come to visit.

I recently stayed with RIGH Properties and used the time to explore the city the way I like to – slowly, with an eye for quiet corners and small comforts. So here’s a short list of places I love, whether you’re visiting for the first time, planning a quiet weekend, or just want to see Edinburgh from a local perspective.

Walks and Stockbridge

Dean Village to Stockbridge

This is one of my favourite walks. It follows the Water of Leith and takes you from the quiet charm of Dean Village into the heart of Stockbridge.

On Sundays, there’s the Stockbridge Market with amazing paella, dumplings, and handmade goods.

Mootz

Also in Stockbridge. Excellent sandwiches made with focaccia and filled generously. A good option if you’re hungry and want something simple and satisfying.

The Bailie Bar

A traditional pub tucked down a set of stairs on St Stephen Street. Cosy, relaxed and a good place to end a walk or spend a rainy afternoon.

Coffee and Quiet Spots

Toppings & Co. Booksellers

A multi-storey bookshop with big windows, ladders, and corners to sit with a coffee and read. They offer something called “coffee with a bookseller” where you chat about what you like to read and they recommend books for you. You get a voucher to spend in the shop as part of it. A thoughtful experience or gift for anyone who loves books.

Cairngorm Coffee

The Melville Street location is a favourite. The coffee and matcha are both very good. If you sit outside you’ll have a clear view of St Mary’s Cathedral down the street.

Food and Drinks

Hey Palu

A small bar in the city centre serving excellent Negronis. The staff are warm and welcoming. Good for a drink before dinner or on its own.

Ting Thai Caravan

If you’re staying in and want delivery, I always go for the pad thai from here.

Gifts and Local Shopping

TBCo

A shop focused on sustainable fashion and homeware. Their tartan blankets, baby blankets and pyjamas are well made and easy to pack as gifts. It’s a nice place to stop in if you’re looking to bring something home that feels local but not touristy.

Treen

A well-curated space offering sustainable and ethical fashion. Clean lines, neutral tones, and pieces you’ll want to wear often. Everything feels intentional.

Dick’s

Just off Dundas Street, Dick’s carries simple, high-quality clothing and accessories. The focus is on craftsmanship and materials, with some seriously beautiful jumpers.

Bard

Located in Leith. A thoughtful collection of art, design, homeware and objects by independent makers. Beautifully presented. Worth the detour if you’re in the area.

Staying with RIGH made it easy to slow down and enjoy the city. I ended the day with a hot shower, a warm robe and the city lights outside the window. Whether you live here or you’re just passing through, Edinburgh always has more to offer when you take your time with it.
